We are just days away from the first cross country race for many high school athletes and I wanted offer a little advice for those of you who might be racing for the first time: 1. Don't go out as fast as you can, remember that you will have to keep this pace for several miles. It is much smarter to go out conservatively and then pick up the pace as the race goes on. 2. Don't eat anything out of the ordinary in the hours before the race. I would also recommend not to eat anything for at least three hours before to avoid stomach upset. 3. Cross country spikes can help you reach your time goals faster. They are lighter than training shoes and are specially designed for improved grip and traction on the cross country course. 4. Don't forget to have fun! Once you have raced once, you'll have a clearer picture of what you want to accomplish in your future racing and hopefully continue to improve your best time, which is often referred to as a PR (personal record) or PB (personal best).! Wishing you all a great season and many happy miles of running in-between!

The best month for running is January...in Florida.  Katie, for a change of scenery you should stop by the Endurunce Shop on Thursdays around 5 pm to run with the River Runners, or visit their website www.scrr.org and see where their next Saturday morning breakfast run is being held.

As for me, I just ran head first into the tendinitis monster again.  Ever since I stopped participating in contact sports I've been more often injured than not.  This running thing is a real pain in my tendon.  I signed up for the Disney World Marathon last month thinking that the plan was a PR; that's sub 2:53.  Now the plan is to stay injury free; that's a near impossibility.  I've taken to walking as a cross-training method in the interim here because I can still cover a number of miles on foot, which allows me to continue eating like I'm running (or at least close there to).  I'd bike if it didn't require a bike, and I'd swim if it didn't make me have to pee.  Hopefully I won't need to debate between any of those methods within a week.

Here it is, the start of week 3 on my training for the Kansas City 1/2!!!  So far the runs have been going very well which gives me hope that I can actually run this 13.1 mile race.  I think soon I need to find some new places to run so I dont get sick of the same path that I have been using.  If anyone has any fun suggestions I would appreciated your input or suggestions.  I also want to say great job to all of those that ran in the Granite City 5K this weekend!!!

Here it is, already August, as if the summer had somewhere to hurry off to. I don't really mind to see it go, as fall is my favorite season to run and race. Autumn takes me back to when I first fell in love with running..when I joined my high school cross country team. I ran 4 miles that first day, in old, beat-up basketball shoes. Many years, miles and proper footwear later I am still running, racing and I hope it continues for many fall seasons to come. What's the best month for running? I vote late September..
